The HSA has undertaken many projects to present the
history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.
2009
Celebrating Bartlett 2009 - A year of province wide activities celebrating the amazing arctic career of Captain Bob Bartlett and commemorating his role in the "dash to the Pole" by Admiral Robert Peary in 1909.
2005-2010
- Provided $300,000 over 5 years for the new exhibition in the Visitor Centre at Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
2002
- Provided $25,000 for the translation of the Red Bay Underwater archaeological report.
2000
- Organized a ten day Viking Millennium International Symposium, which attracted over 300 historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts from around the world. The conference started in St. John's, moved to L'anse aux Meadows, over to the Labrador Straits, and ended in Corner Brook.
1998
- Provided $50,000 funding for interpretive signage for Port au Choix National Historic Site of Canada, as well as publishing the book Ancient Cultures Bountiful Seas: the Story of Port au Choix by Dr. Priscilla Renouf.
1998
- Provided $75,000 towards the conservation and restoration of the Cape Spear Lighthouse Dome, Cape Spear National Historic Site of Canada.
1993 to present
- Restored, operates, and maintains Hawthorne Cottage, National Historic Site of Canada, the home of Captain Bob Bartlett, famous navigator and arctic explorer.
1992
- Restored the interior of Cabot Tower, Signal Hill, St. John's, NL.
1985
- Worked with 12 artists across Canada to produce the Canadian Art Print Portfolio , which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Parks. The project raised funds to support the Signal Hill Tattoo.
1983
- Financially assisted with the reconstruction of the Queen's Battery Barracks at Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
1983
- Commissioned internationally reknowned artist David Blackwood to create a limited edition etching of Cape Spear. One was presented to Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their visit to Newfoundland, and the profits from the sale of the rest of the edition were used to support the Signal Hill Tattoo.
Ongoing:
Provides annual financial support for the Signal Hill Tattoo, Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
Provided an annual grant to support the viking enactors living history presentation at L'Anse aux Meadows NHS.
Sponsors the annual Manning Awards for Excellence in the Public Presentation of Historic Places.
Owns and periodically displays the Newfoundland - A Place Called Home Exhibition at 309 Water Street, St John's, above the Heritage Shop.
Annually co-ordinates regional Heritage Fairs across the province, as part of a National Heritage Fair Programme http://www.heritage.k12.nf.ca
Works in partnership with Parks Canada to support workshops and development of the Alliance of National Historic Sites in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Financially Supported the creation of "Meeting of Two Worlds" bronze sculpture at L'Anse aux Meadows, National Historic Site of Canada.
